March 27, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Webster Volunteer Fire Department Past Chief and Past President, Alfred “Al” Willmes. Chief Willmes served the Webster Volunteer Department from March of 1958 until the time of his passing. He celebrated his 67th year of membership this March. Chief Willmes was the Webster Fire Chief from 1972 - 1973 as well as WVFD Association President from 1989 – 1990.

Obituary of Alfred "Al" John Willmes

Webster - at age 89, Al lost his courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.

Predeceased by his first wife Patricia Willmes; siblings Anna (Richard) Leicht, Alice Willmes, Buddy (Jack) Cleary, Joseph (Beryl) Willmes, Stella (Walter) Purdy, Harry (Florence) Willmes, Eleanor (Joe) Maier; and brothers-in-law Chuck Schutt and Harlan Purdy.

Survived by his wife of 34 years, Barbara “Bobbie” Willmes, children Alan (Eva) Willmes, Andy (Brenda) Willmes and Amy Willmes; stepchildren Chris DiFrancesco, Lorrie (Dave) Miller, and Dr. Greg (Lisa) DiFrancesco; grandchildren Alexandra and Alan Willmes Jr., Ethan Miller, Quinn and Britton Willmes, Amanda, Austin, and Michael Leckinger Jr., and Mia and Jacob DiFrancesco; sisters Theresa Schutt and Mary Purdy; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and his beloved dog Taffy.

Al was born in Webster, NY to Anthony and Margaret Willmes on January 15, 1936, the youngest of 10 children. Al was most at home on a tractor as he grew up plowing the fields on his family farm harvesting the Willmes home grown corn that was sought by many.

After serving in the US Army from 1955-1957, he worked at Kodak until he retired in 1991. He was proud of his time spent volunteering with the Webster Fire Department as Fire Chief (1972-1973) and President (1989 - 1990). Al was an avid hunter, loved to play euchre, and was a diehard Buffalo Bills fan. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Calling Hours will be held on Monday, March 31, from 4-7 PM at Willard H. Scott Funeral Home, 12 South Ave., Webster. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 1, at St. Mary's of the Lake Church, 5823 Walworth Rd., Ontario. Interment at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Al’s memory to the Webster Fire Department or the American Cancer Society.
